This position will involve being the CCCS representative and spokesperson for immigration services in the Bronx through oversight and coordination of immigration services and operations at the South Bronx Center and the development, implementation, coordination, and supervision of legal services delivery in the Bronx. The purpose and objective of the job is to further establish immigration services into the community, respond holistically to needs there, and develop CCCS’ position and presence with government, partners, stakeholders, and affiliates. This will include advocacy, liaising, outreach, education, media engagement, and more.  With general responsibility for immigration services, the Director also will oversee, ensure efficient coordination of, and engage administrative support for the operation of broader and diverse Immigrant and Refugee Services Division programming based out of the South Bronx Center, in coordination with appropriate Directors and CCCS support.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  1. South Bronx Center Immigration Services: with guidance and direction from the Division Director, the Director of Bronx Immigration Services will: be the spokesperson and lead for immigration services in the Bronx; in coordination with the Immigration Legal Services Director, develop and implement a strategy for immigration services resourcing, implementation, and delivery, as well as advocacy, outreach, education, and support; in coordination with the Division Director and other Immigrant and Refugee Services Directors, will oversee, coordinate, and ensure the coherence and consistency of administrative and other relevant support and needs.
  2. Bronx Legal Services: in consultation with Division and CCCS directors and local stakeholders, develop and implement a cohesive model for the delivery of immigration legal services in the Bronx. This will include development of office protocols; coordination and supervision of legal work; development of budgets and procedures to review and track expenses for different programs; handling personnel issues in consultation with the Department Director and Human Resources; etc.
  3. Supervision/Coordination: supervise and coordinate the provision of legal services by staff attorneys, Fellows, migrations counselors and accredited representatives. This will include advising and training staff on substantive law and procedure, monitoring quality of legal work, ensuring delivery of legal services, monitoring compliance with office procedures and program reporting requirements, conducting preliminary and annual staff evaluations; and assisting Division directors with required reports, requests for information about program and funding proposals.
  4. Direct Representation: maintain a limited caseload, in light of supervisory duties, that will include screening, advising, and representing individuals: a) facing removal proceedings or other immigration-related federal litigation matters, including, but not limited to: criminal or security grounds of inadmissibility/deportability, cancellation of removal, asylum, Board of Immigration Appeals and federal appeals practice, motion practice, etc., and b) in more specialized and complex immigration applications including, but not limited to: special juvenile immigrant petitions, VAWA petitions, U and T visa applications, deferred action, inadmissibility waivers, etc.
  5. Presentations/Training/Teaching: Develop and provide trainings, presentations, Know-Your-Rights and workshops throughout the Archdiocese, with an emphasis on New York City and the Bronx. Train, mentor and supervise new legal staff to provide presentations.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:

The position will require the director to perform work in the Bronx, at the main office at 80 Maiden Lane, other sites in the Lower Hudson Valley, and in immigration, federal and family courts. The position requires willingness to travel throughout the Archdiocese. Days and hours of work are generally 9:00 AM to 5 PM Monday - Friday. Additional evening/weekend hours may be required to meet court and/or program deadlines or client needs.

  • Travel at least 20% of the time using public transportation or vehicle, traverse city streets, occasionally ascend/descend stairs, and be exposed to outside weather conditions.

Qualifications/Education and/or experience required:

  1. Juris Doctor.
  2. At least five (5) years of post-JD experience in immigration law.
  3. Admission to a bar of any state and/or the District of Columbia.
  4. At least five (5) years of supervisory experiences.

Skills, Licenses, and/or competencies

  • Bilingual in English and a 2nd language a plus, but not required.
  • Ability and willingness to travel throughout New York City and the Lower Hudson
